*Wincest Warning* Sam and Dean - Gay?This thread began on April 1st on the CW boards. It was started by JessieGirl99.
1) JessieGirl99 - 06:40 PM
Dude did anyone happen to notice how often other people think Sam and Dean are you know...um a couple? I've just noticed that a happens more than a few times. I think it's kind of funny some people think they're a gay couple. Especially since they seem so burly and manly (not to imply any kind of stereotype).

I think that when two guys at that age check into motel rooms together as often as they then sometimes people are bound to assume the wrong thing. It's realistically enough in my opinion... and jokes like that are always funny because, seriously, Dean's expressions when it happens are priceless. And there haven't been that many. 'Bugs' and 'Playthings' were pretty much it weren't they? What Michael said in 'Something Wicked' doesn't really count... he was just being snarky.
Sometimes I think the gay jokes are (or have at least become) fan service... recognizing that a lot of people in this fandom are into slash and/or wincest. But that might just be me.
3) kanihaveyou - 06:54 PM
people only think sam and dean are gey cuz the writers thinks its funny to write in gay inuendos.
4) DeansHoney - 07:40 PM
Neither of them are they love the ladies to much for it especially Dean and the gay jokes can go a little over board IMO

I know but when they run into other people it's funny the way they make that assumption. Besides even if they were gay, I think they drive each other crazy too much anyway. hehe
6) Smallvillian0 - 07:50 PM
I think it's gotten old already.
7) Supernaturalfan - 07:55 PM
Idk, I think it's funny too. If they did it every week it would be over the top and old, but I think every once in a while it's good for a little giggle. And how can you not love the looks on their faces when it happens?

This thread isn't about Wincest. It's about the little joke they occasionally throw in where people think they're a couple. We know they aren't, obviously , but some people make mistakes.
10) CalicoKat (calicokat) - 08:14 PM
Heck, my friend Jojo's dad thought they were a gay couple the first time he saw the show. No jokes involved. When two people spend that much time around each other, unless you already know better, it's easy to assume. I think the gay jokes are only realistic. People will assume that, from time to time.
11) IScream4Dean - 08:33 PM
LOL I watched Playthings twice this weekend and it cracks me up when that chick thinks they are gay and asked them if they wanted a king size bed, oh man Dean's face
12) Supernaturalfan - 08:39 PM
I know, I love that part. I also like how he asks her 'What do you mean, we look the type?'
13) IScream4Dean - 09:20 PM
the look on her face when Dean he said that, priceless

Actually, considering how much time they spend together and how many hotels they've stayed at together, I think they could've made a lot more jokes than they have. And the jokes they did make were relatively tasteful and very realistic. In "Bugs" with Larry? Two men walk up to a open-house real estate barbeque and say they're interested in a house? A lot of people, especially if they were trying to be PC, would automatically assume. Larry did, and he took it in stride when they explained they were just brothers. Same thing with "Playthings", although Susan looked a lot more surprised when they explained that to her. Of course, that just fueled a million more jokes between the brothers throughout the episode (butch-overcompensating!Dean and doll-loving!Sam anyone?).
As for Michael in "Something Wicked", he's a pre-teen boy. When my brother was a pre-teen, he was accusing Harry Potter of sleeping with Professor Lupin just because they were alone in a room together during the third movie. So it's quite realistic that a bored 12 year old would snark at two male customers sharing a room. Almost all (straight or in-denial) boys that age seem overly fascinated with gay jokes. Go figure.
But aside from all that, Kripke et al are just tossing the jokes in there for the fangirls. It brings out the giggles and it plays further on the "chemistry" between Jensen and Jared. I mean, have you SEEN the Paley event? The two of them were flirting like mad -- and yes, it was friendly, joking flirting. But it's that dynamic that the producers are manipulating. They did it in "Tall Tales" as well, with Sam tackling Dean to the bed and wrapping his leg around him. Or even in IMTOD with Dean joking about laying his head on Sam's shoulder, etc. Little digs at the "manly" bond the brothers share, that sometimes comes across as a gay relationship to people who don't know them because they're just that close.
It just makes it that much funnier that Dean is such a ladies' man. I mean, for a guy like that to be mistaken for gay as often as he has been? It must grate on him something terrible. But it's also cool to see that while he goes "Um, no. We're brothers." he's also not going "EW. EWWW. How dare you?! Gay is so bad!" etc etc etc. Being brought up by a single ex-marine dad and living his life as a ladies' man, Dean takes the gay jokes rather admirably. It's obvious that he's not a homophobe. It's sort of taken for granted that Sam wouldn't be, having gone to an "enlightened" institution for higher education and all. Universities/colleges are sort of seen as open-minded places, and as a university student I can honestly say that's true...for the most part. But for a guy like Dean to have that nonchalant attitude is sort of...refreshing.
Anyway, I figure that if my dad (who cringes at every show with an element of homosexuality, whether it is a relationship or just subtextual humour) still thinks it's amusing, they can't have gone overboard just yet.

Honestly, the gay jokes may not even be for the fangirls. Now in the past three episodes there's been some jokes for the fangirls...but if nobody noticed them, they can stay safely hidden.
16) xavierforlife - 12:32 AM
Any time two people of the same sex think too.much alike they have to be gay this is put in our minds from what we grow up thinking. as any one at one time had a freind or family member. which throught the same or got a joke just by looking at some thing with out having to say word . this is not gay but having some one that under stands what you think and feel before you do .if people were riased with an open mind this kind of thinking would not around. if you do look in to yourself you would find someone like this in your life as a freind or family member if you do not i fell sorry for you . do have a close mind.

Too true. Although it's nice to think they are. I'd say more recently the jokes have definitely been a nod to the fans, yes.
But yeah, I'm sure many people would sleep easier thinking it's the writers goofing off rather than the writers deliberately giving the boys wincesty gay vibes. I don't actually care either way -- I just think it's amusing from all perspectives. And oh, the way LJ exploded after the TT director's cut showed up here... *snickers*

I agree. I've been asked more than once if I'm dating one or another of my best friends. People assume. Personally, I don't mind. But I know many would.
There's actually a fic, though, that demonstrates this very issue. I found it on the LJ challenge community spn_outsidepov and fell for it right away. It's super cute and shows the boys from an outsider's perspective (obviously). She starts out thinking they're gay and realises that whups, she was so wrong. XD So here's some pimpage! Trust me, it's worth the read. http://eighth-horizon.livejournal.com/42794.html (Warning for some swearing! But hey, no spoilers!)
20) CalicoKat - 12:45 AM
Yeah, people always assume one of my best friends and I are dating. It's funnier because he's gay and I'm a lesbian. (It's the opposite situation!)

22) ordencodex - 12:54 AM
My situation is usually with my female friends. One's straight, the other's bi and I adore them both, but am unfortunately straight. (Though sometimes I wonder why, because I get so much more attention from girls. Totally unfair!) I just grin and pretend it's because they think I'm so Fabulous. Which I am. Clearly. *cough*

The school of psychology I was raised in says it's perfectly normal for a heterosexual female to want to see two hot men making out without a woman there so that she can freely imagine herself as one man or the other interchangeably.

You know, like...you can imagine making out with Dean Winchester, right? But what if Dean Winchester was making out with...I dunno, Clark Kent. Now you can imagine the two of them making out, and sometimes be Dean Winchester in your head, and sometimes Clark Kent! It's like two for the timeframe of one.

Well yeah. But there's also the fact that if it's two men together, there's no other WOMAN involved. And for a straight female, two men are better than one and HEY sex without having to look at other girls. *shrug* It's a proven fact that a HUGE number of the fans of slash, yaoi, etc are heterosexual women. What I find interesting is the number of lesbians who also ship slash. I know quite a few. After years in fandoms like this, I figure it's the romance between two men (who are usually portrayed as unemotional, stoic, so on and so forth) that brings in the "emotional" women. Actually, I wrote a whole rant about it when this same topic came up in the Harry Potter and Brokeback Mountain fandoms. Feel free to read it, if you like. I am le tired and don't feel like typing it up again, haha!

I was just thinking about my friend Ed, who thinks it's acceptable to make out with your brother if a reeeeeeally hot girl thinks it's hot, and your ability to get laid may depend on it. I can see that scenario in a totally wincest free way.
Dean: Dude! You have to make out with me.
Sam: ...no?
Dean: ::tosses a smile over his shoulder at the waiting woman::back to Sam:: Dude. Just...suck it up, okay. Suck face.
Sam: ... No.
Dean: Come on! I'm like this close. ::glances back at girl: : ::back to Sam:: Look at her! ::whine::
Sam: ...I'm not making out with you, Dean.
Dean:
Sam: ... No.
Dean:
Sam: ::sigh::raises brow:: If you can tell me her name, I will make out with you. Ten minutes.
Dean: ... ( ... She's a Saggitarius.

I posted this on another thread, but I liked it
Sam and Dean are staying at a motel, and another guest complains theyre making too much noise.
The maid from the motel knocks on the door.
Sam: We're busy!
Maid knocks again. Then Dean answers it half naked.
Dean: Look lady, we're busy.
Dean shuts the door and turns around, smiling and giggling.

Totally. But the asking/pouting/cajoling/refusing would be cute. I can just imagine Sam giving him that WTF look like he did at the end of "Nightmare". And then progressing to the classic bitchface that we all know and love, only to settle on an amused eyeroll and an affectionate smirk. Oh boys. How I love thee...
44) CalicoKat - 01:35 AM
You know, Dean's already proposed a three way with Sam: "We could go to TJ, or Hollywood...see if we can bang Lindsay Lohan." (Croatoan)
45) stacylove - 01:38 AM

46) JessieGirl99 - 01:42 AM
HA! Hate her with the same passion as Paris Hilton. It's actually pretty unhealthy adn kind of demented but oh well. hehe
47) ordencodex - 01:43 AM
Oh MAN. That night was hysterical at my place. My housemates were rolling their eyes for hours -- thought they'd sprain something! Went something like...
Dean: ...or Hollywood! See if we could bang Lindsay Lohan!
Me: HAHAHAHA! OMG! THREESOME! HAHAHA! Ew. Um...gross. Skuzzy Lohan. Why couldn't he have said someone else? ... but still! HAHAHA!
[etc etc etc]
Dean: ...he told me something. He told me something about you...
Sam: What? Dean, what'd he tell you?
MONTH LONG HIATUS. KTHXBAI.
Me: ...NOOOOOOOOOO! I'm melting. MELTING.
The threesome joke sort of faded from my mind in the midst of all the frustration. Even remembering that night makes me weep. *flop*

It'd be nice if we get to season 5 or 7 and it's clear the show's not going to be renewed or something if we get the two of them going to bed with a woman together. Mmm...like The Brother's Grim. Best ending ever.

I can only imagine. I feel so bad for Jared, having to work with her for HoW.
Actually I find a lot of celebrities these days seem to be total skeezes. It's part of the reason it's so easy to fall in love with J&J. They seem (I say seem because we only see what we're shown, right?) like such down-to-earth, genuinely nice guys who are there to do their job and please their fans. It's refreshing to see people who are so (relatively) normal, and two guys who have such a strong friendship as well. We're always hearing about Britney Spears shaving her head in a fit of I-Hate-The-World-Poor-Me or Paris Hilton walking around with her stupid Purse!Dog or Lindsay Lohan being fired for being such a [censored] but you never hear about the accomplishments of people like our boys. Alas.

It's kind of an amazing film.
...not just for that. Honestly, it's creepy as all get out, and pretty darn fun. (A little British in its humor, though, so if you hate Black Adder and Monty Python you may not entirely love it.)
53) ordencodex - 02:04 AM
People hate Black Adder and Monty Python? Is that POSSIBLE?
I can sort of quote most of Holy Grail. *sheepish cough*
I am so renting that movie. As soon as, you know, exams don't OWN MY SOUL. asldkfjls;kjfs why oh why did they have to go on hiatus again NOW? *whimpers*

It's directed by Python Terry Gilliam, and you can feel it in there. Which, for me, makes it even more awesome.
And that's all I managed to save before it was deleted! Feel free to continue this discussion, and be more explicit about Wincest or Gay!Sam and Gay!Dean if you want.

What I find interesting, actually, is thinking about things like "what if one of them was written as gay? how would that affect the story, their relationship, etc?" I mean, how would Dean react if he found out Sam was gay? Or the other way around?
...now I'm grinning like mad and imagining all sorts of amusing scenarios.
Sam: Dean, can you try thinking with your upstairs brain for a minute?
Dean: *rolls eyes* Oh come on Samantha, you're just whining because you're blind to the hotness that is that woman. *waves at the Hot Chick*
Sam: *huffs* No, I'm just frustrated that I can't even talk to you because you're distracted by the shiny.
Dean: *evil grin* Oh honeycakes I should've realised you were jealous. Y'know Sammy, just 'cause you're gayer than a spring parade doesn't mean you get to have this fine piece of male perfection. My butt is off limits to you, Mr Grabby Hands.
Sam: ...I will kill you.
Dean:
...or...
Dean: *makes eyes at pool rival he's hustling* Wanna show me how you use that...stick?
Guy: *blinks* Uh. Sure, a game. Sounds great. How much you wanna bet?
Dean: *smirk* How much d'you think I'm worth?
Sam: Ugh. Dean. Shut up and play.
Dean: Sammy I'm working here.
Sam: Yeah you're working something alright. Can you go ONE NIGHT without getting laid?
Dean: What, and turn into you? Stick-up-the-butt straight boy isn't really my thing, Sammy.
Sam: ...no comment.
Dean: Dude, shut up. Totally not what I meant. Although...
Sam: *claps hands over ears* I CAN'T HEAR YOU LALALALALALALALA!

Thanks for reviving the thread!
Personally I love the gay jokes (bring them on!).
I'm in agreement that they're a by-product of how close the brothers are (and appear to outsiders) rather than any kind of secret message from Kripke about them being gay. I always love watching the boys reaction to it!
I wouldn't mind either one of them being gay though, as long as that didn't result in a major change in the character. I guess at this point they could only be bisexual though, unless Dean suddenly renounces his interest in women and Sam decides he's killed enough girls after sleeping with them!
I doubt their reactions to one another would be much different than they are now. If Sam came out, Dean would just make some comment like his previous 'the things you learn about a guy' and forget about it . And if Dean came out? Sam would probably just laugh.

Bwaha yes! Especially Dean's face. Priceless. He's constantly shocked by it, no matter how often it happens. <3

I don't think it could possibly result in a character change. I mean, changing the biological sex of the person someone is taking to bed doesn't really have any bearing on their personality. Then again, it'd be a huge 180 for Dean. XD

YES. *grin* I think Dean might tease Sam something terrible, but vice versa as well. I can just imagine how cracked up Sam would be if Dean suddenly came out to him. Dean would see it as bug-my-little-brother fodder, but Sam would probably see it as five Christmases and ten birthdays all rolled into one!

I think the whole thread was hilarious!
There is no way they are ever going to make either character gay - it is way too mainstream for that.
I love the gay jokes - they add to the wonderful humour of the show.
And as for Wincest, after reading it (and not judging beforehand!) (thank you C - you know who you are!) I love it!
Okay, that was my two cents!

I can imagine Dean starting to annoy the hell out of Sam by pretending to set Sam up with random hot guys they meet, like he does to Sam now with hot chicks. Or making his lewd comments or asking lewder than usual questions (like: so, did you have a good time? Who was on top?). LOL. More funny! I wonder if they could get away with doing something like this in an AU or weird dream episode? Heck, it would be a nice change from the usual cliches.
Sam doesn't seem to be one who intentionally picks on his brother and is the more emotionally sensitive of the two (heh heh), so I don't really see him as carrying out any kind of tease if Dean came out. He'd laugh, but then I think he'd take it more seriously. He'd probably be worrying about Dean having nights with guys "Dean, they're more dangerous than chicks" and being motherly about it.
I suddenly feel the need to read gay brother fic. Is there any gay brother fic? I'll have to do some searching.

Very true. I didn't mean to imply that I think Sam would be mean about it. Just that he'd have that "OMG. SRSLY?" reaction at first, and make a few jokes about how Dean's always been such a ladies' man. But yeah, he'd definitely fall into supportive/overprotective brother mode pretty much immediately after.
