I just posted this over at the CW and feel that I might get a better response here, due to the higher concentration of Critical Minds per capita. (No offense meant to the Critical Thinkers over at CW.)

Sometimes when I get bored, I start scrolling through sites like wikipedia to find interesting facts about topics I'm interested in.

Over the past two days, I've been engaged in a Facebook debate about religion. I know, I know. How shameful and embarrassing. Waste of time, etc. But...I'm sort of a sucker for anything that lets me talk about history. So I get roped into these things. You all know how it is!

Anyway. So I looked up "atheism" on wikipedia. After a while of clicking various links, I came upon a website called "Capella's Guide to Atheism". There, I found an article titled "Famous Atheists". I clicked on it. As I was scrolling through, I came across a familiar name: Kubrick.

In fact, it was Stanley Kubrick. I sat back in my chair and thought to myself: "Huh. I know EK and the gang like to do their research. And they like irony. And they don't have any qualms about making somewhat controversial religious statements on TV (case in point: A Very Supernatural Christmas). I wonder if the extremist evangelical Christian character named Kubrick in 'Fresh Blood' got his name from Stanley Kubrick, this famous atheist, as an in-joke?"

So then I looked up Stanley Kubrick in order to see if he had any other possible credits that would make him appropriate to use in an episode of Supernatural. Through the PoG (Power of Google) I discovered that he had an IMDB page. And when I read the list of his movies, it struck me why else his name was so familiar.

Stanley Kubrick is the director of such movies as "Lolita", "A Clockwork Orange", "Dr Strangelove" and...."The Shining".

Now. I really REALLY want to know if Kripke and our wonderful writers decided to sneak in this reference to the director of "The Shining" and to make it an in-joke that the character named after him was super religious when Kubrick himself was a self-proclaimed non-believer in any monotheistic gods and a rumoured full-blown atheist.

What do you guys think? Is it a sound theory?

I think you may be on to something.

When I first read the character's name, I recognized it, but didn't know who the real Kubrick was.  (I was thinking he was someone in the movie industry, though; go, me!)  The info. you found was interesting.

Ah, Supernatural and their little in-jokes.  Fun. Smile

And, hey, you're not the only one around here who has dabbled in the religious discussion thing!  Smile

Really? Awesome! I tend to get involved in far too many discussions like that.

*SCREAMS INCOHERENTLY* So I hate the CW boards even more than usual, today. Somebody whined that they did too and that they wanted to leave. More people chimed in with "if only...but there are no alternative forums". So I tried to tell people about SN4GU, and they DELETED by post BOTH TIMES. Wtf CW boards? Sad

Seriously?!  Ah, they're just jealous.

You'd think the CW Lounge people would be happy to get rid of a few posters, as there are way way too many!  Oh, well.  Whatever!

Look at it this way:  the deletions may have kept some, uh, people who wouldn't quite fit in away from here.  The like-oh-my-god-he's-sooo-hawwt! ones.  Very Happy

*snickers* That's true. I mean, there are some people on there that I don't mind talking to. But some of those ones? I read what they write DESPITE their terrible netspeak, because what they say has more substance than "OmG sO hAwT". *flop* But you're right. It's probably for the best that they don't swarm the place, just in case. Problem is...that means we're going to stay a small forum. Le sigh.

Well, I'm okay with the small forum thing
The CW boards just suck. You can't post anything over there anymore. No outside links whatsoever, only photobucket for pic's etc. Very Happy
I guess they finally got some mods that care what is posted, even if they care way too much at times too Rolling Eyes

They really really really do suck. The only reason I ever go is to get spoilers. Because clearly, that is what's important! Wink

I like the smaller forum, too. But a few more active members would be nice over here, don't you think? We wouldn't go through so many lulls if it wasn't just a couple of us chitchatting.

Dammit, I really want to know if I'm right about this theory of mine!

That's funny. The first thing I thought when I heard 'Kubrick' was 'Stanley Kubrick', mostly because of that weird movie 'A Clockwork Orange'. That kind of creeped me out.

Indeed, I'd enjoy more members here too.  As you said, there'd be more activity, which would be cool!  And, yes, some people at the CW Lounge are great (and I wish they'd visit us too!).  But it just seems that the majority are. . . *not* great.  Hey, they're probably just too young.  We'd probably be glad to have most of them here in a few years. Smile

It'd be great to have more members, but I'd be sad if this place got as massive as the CW Lounge, where you just get lost in the shuffle, the same threads happen over and over again because there are just too many people to be able to keep up with it all, etc.  I like medium-sized forums best, I guess is what I'm saying.  If I had high speed 'net, maybe I'd go on a P.M. invitation campaign at the Lounge; scout out those who seem cool (not that I'm saying *I'm* cool! Laughing   I just meant--er--people I think we'd enjoy chatting with here!) and send 'em an invitation.  Oh, it'd help if I also weren't shy!

If I were a member anywhere else, I'd be glad to campaign for ya!  But, alas, here and the Lounge are the only places I bother with.  Sorry.

Hey, no worries. It's cool. Smile And I know exactly what you're saying. Medium is definitely best and I'd hate to do the repeating threads thing.
I just feel like our layout? Is approximately 1000x more effective and condusive to good discussion. You can't repeat threads if they never really move. Our board doesn't work like that. And we have a search engine. And everything is wonderfully categorised! *loves on*

Hm. A PM campaign, you say? Possibly I should consider this.
