SN fandom hurts my brain sometimes.

Apparently there's a whole lot of wank about Dean being a misogynist prick.

...of course, in the wank, they call him names like "prick", "dick", "asshole", etc. But...apparently using negative language directed at men is so totally not the same because they're not the ones who play second fiddle and so deserve it.

...or something.

And most of the quotes they list as being misogynistic? *sigh* Are directed at women who have killed/are killing people (ex. witches practicing dark magic) and demons (ex. Ruby) or women who keep stealing from the boys and/or shooting them (ex. Bela).

I just. Gah.

I mean, okay. Trust me. I am not about to sit back and take men being misogynistic towards me or any woman/women. I'm an equalist -- I think all men and women (and people in general) should be treated equally in society. I do. And it truly pisses me off when men treat us as if we're inferior. It does.

So. The way I see it, Dean uses terms like "skank", "bitch", "slut", "whore", etc to refer to demons, yes? Often they are demons inhabiting female "meatsuits" (ex. Meg, Ruby, Lillith). But I really don't think that Dean is insulting the WOMEN they are inhabiting so much as the demons themselves. Or other evil things/people that happen to be female. And I don't think Dean is a woman hater. He adores his mother (STILL), adored and pretty much worshipped the ground Cassie walked on, has repeatedly pointed out to Sam that the girls Sam shows interest in are "cool", etc, treats Ellen with the utmost respect, even respected Missouri despite her being pretty nasty to him, and told Jo out-and-out that he has no issue with women who want to do the job, just with amateurs. And in his dream world? Carmen was, in his eyes, "better" than him -- she was such a "catch" that he was shocked that he got her but totally understood why he loved her so much. When he found out she was a nurse? He said "I'm dating a nurse. That is so...respectable!"

Add to that the fact that I bet most of the women complaining about Dean's misogynistic comments have called another woman a bitch or some other 'female' insult, likely in the last WEEK?

I'm not feeling it.

I myself call other women "bitch" or refer to them as "sluts" at times. Of course, men don't escape that. I've recently referred to one guy as a "dick" and I've more than once called a guy an "asshole". I think those insults tend to be used more toward men than women, yes?

I just don't really see the difference. And I don't really see Dean going around calling every woman he meets "bitch" or "whore" or whatever. I see him treating most women he meets (save Bela) very respectfully and protectively.

I don't know.

Maybe this is just me? Is it just me? Am I just being another misogynist that needs to wake up and smell the coffee, and stop watching this show before the prevalence of the word "bitch" makes my eyes bleed?

You had me laughing, Sarah!  Nice argument.

Look, I don't have a problem with any of the name calling on the show.  Dean's not said one thing on that show that's not accurate.  You're right he's treated every woman with utmost respect, with exception of the demons and Bela, but hey, Bela deserves all the name calling he's thrown at her.  And let's not forget Ruby calling Dean a dick and short bus (that one still pisses me off).

So, yeah, I don't get it.  I'm with you on this one, Sarah.  I tend to stay away from SN fandom (or at least over at the SN CW forum).  They tended to piss me off in some way each time I was over there with all their griping and bellyaching.  Some of those folks need to get a life and a reality check!

Oh my god, I was so blind. That link opened my eyes. Dean is a misogynist, I can see it now. NOT.

My, my, this wank is a whole lot less entertaining than the last one you linked to, Sarah. Those poor people have some serious issues. And obviously too much time on their hands if they can rewatch three complete seasons just to count the word 'bitch'.

When has Dean ever been disrespectful to women? I don't recall a single scene.

And stupid me totally missed that he first threatened Bela sexually in 3.15 and then told her she was not worth getting raped. Huh????? Apparently I was watching another show.

Oh, fuck. Don't even get me started.

When Ruby called Dean a dick, fandom CHEERED. I was all "...hang on. He's not allowed to call her 'bitch', but 'dick' is AWESOME? wtf."

And shortbus? *RAGES RAGES RAGES* That comment, I'm pretty sure, is the most offensive and politically incorrect comment ever heard on the show -- and I'm pretty sure it got quite a lot of "right on!"s instead of the sort of response I had, which was "WTF?"

Man, I know. The CW forum is pretty bad. I've even kept away from fandom (except for being over here all the time) this time around. I haven't even been participating on LJ. I read a LOT of fic and watch vids, etc. But I just don't want to get into the drama. I had a enough of that with Harry Potter. After that crap, SN fandom seems like old hat to me.

Yeah, no kidding. At least the Wincest one was full of lulz (that's the one you're referring to, right? I can never keep all the wanks straight...)

There's been this huge feminist campaign going on on LJ and the SN fandom in particular for about six months now. When it started out, they were just griping about how many women are killed and/or thrown around on the show, and how many women Dean saw as nothing but sex on legs. Sigh. Now it's progressed.

And I get where they're coming from, but I really think they're going a bit overboard with the whole thing. I don't agree with the idea of feminism where all men are jerks and we need to champion the wonderfulness of women. I think that we need to champion women to bring our status up to par, sure. But when you start getting nitpicky or ignoring the fact that men are just as beat up on the show and that women are referring to men as "dicks" "jerks" (which, I'm sorry, has always made me think of 'jerking off', hence...) "pricks" "assholes", etc... it just doesn't sit well with me. And a lot of the time, they nitpick episodes written by or collaborated on by the female writing team of the show. And when that's pointed out to them, they say that those women are so assimilated into the patriarchal framework of society that... blah blah blah.

It just seems overboard, that's all.

I think what they were getting at is that she THOUGHT he was groping her and when he said "don't flatter yourself" he was implying that he doesn't even find her attractive enough to assault/rape.

Which, okay, was SORT OF the implication, but not really. Dean wasn't saying "you're not good enough to rape" he was saying "please, I hate you, why would I try to feel you up?"

And when have we EVER seen Dean assault a woman or force himself on one in any way? In fact, when he gets the cold shoulder or is shot down, he tends to scuttle off with his tail between his legs and sulk a lot, whining that "she wasn't even that into me", etc. He turns into a wounded little boy when women don't like him. He clearly doesn't think they suck and doesn't hate them if he cares that much about the opinion women have of him.

Oh wow I don't even know what to say to that
Shocked
I have never seen Dean be disrespectful to a woman that didn't deserve it.

I didn't click the link (maybe next time I have high speed access, I will).

And I don't really know what's meant by "fandom" and "wank" (in this respect, anyway!).  But . . .

What?  No, of course he's not!  (And Jule, you made me laugh.)

And yes to all you said, Sarah, about equality.  Amen!

I think Dean adores women.  So much so I think he's scared of them.  Scared to let them in.  He seems to think he's not good enough for the kind of women he'd like to fall in love with (he's so blind!).  And so doesn't tend to risk his heart.  (Cassie's the only one he dared do that with, as far as we know.  And he didn't even seem to totally accept her rejection, bless his heart.)  So tends to take the easy way with brief connections (huh huh huh, I said "connections).

I also wonder if he kinda subconciously compares women to his mom.  And he sees his mom through the rosy view of early childhood.  Probably subconciously looking for someone who kind of lives up to her.  Just an idea.  I mean, we see how he still feels about her.  Can't even handle having someone say outloud that she's never coming back.

Someone counted how many times he said "bitch?"  Um.  Hm.
